My story

I write the part of the site that happens after the contractors leave. A room is not finished when the paint dries; it is finished when the lamp reaches the reading chair, the dog bed has a corner, and the table is set for the people who actually come to dinner. Those decisions — the ones nobody photographs — are the ones I care about most.

My background is in textiles and lighting, which is a polite way of saying I spent years touching fabric and squinting at color temperatures. It taught me that a room reads as “layered” for reasons you can name: three light sources at three heights, at least two textures on the sofa, one wood tone repeated, and a color that appears more than once. Every guide on my desk names those reasons, with the Benjamin Moore or Farrow & Ball number, the fabric weight and the price tier attached.

The cost guides are built from paid invoices — living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, baths, porches and gardens across Charleston, Savannah, Atlanta and Nashville — because “around $2,000” helps nobody. Celebrations get the same treatment: real decor costs from birthdays, weddings and holiday tables I have styled or sourced, not Pinterest estimates.

The Home Files essays are the slow reading on the site: how rooms shape ritual, memory and identity, citing the place-attachment research behind the idea. They are not how-tos. They are the reason the how-tos matter.

How I work

Name the Reason

If a room works, you can say why — the light heights, the repeated wood tone, the second texture. Vague advice is not advice.

Invoices, Not Ranges

Every cost guide is built from what was actually paid, in the city where it was paid.

Rooms Are for People

The dog bed, the reading chair and the weeknight table decide the layout — not the photograph.

Slow Reading Matters

The essays are the reason the how-tos exist: a home is where identity gets practiced.

Porches, patios and gardens budgeted for Southern humidity, pollen and salt air.

Celebrations & Events

Birthdays, weddings and holiday tables with actual decor invoices attached.

Long-form essays on home, identity and place attachment — reading, not how-tos.

Where I work

Regional light, humidity and architecture all change what a room actually needs. Most references land within this radius:
