The Layered Homes began as a set of private styling notes kept while working on a first Charleston apartment in 2017 — 487 square feet on the third floor of a walk-up south of Broad, one south-facing window, a landlord who would not allow paint. A year went into figuring out how to make that room feel layered and collected on a salary that could afford West Elm but not RH, and friends kept asking for the notes to be written down.
Seven years later, those notes have become 196 articles: rooms styled, products sourced, paint colors actually lived with, floor plans read for livability, and before-and-afters with the invoices attached. The writing and the design judgment belong to the editor credited on each page — when you read “I” on this site, that is the stylist who did the work.
What you won’t find here: national-average cost estimates, stock photography, sponsored posts dressed up as editorial, or “quick tips” nobody tested in a real client room. What you will find: specifics — paint line and color number, fabric and supplier, approximate year and city — because that is the only kind of design writing worth trusting from the reader’s side of it.
Beautiful spaces should be lived in, not just looked at — rooms that hold up to dogs, toddlers, bourbon spills and Charleston pollen.
Rooms built in layers — texture, color, pattern, personality — over time, so the finished space reads as collected rather than decorated in a weekend.
