Editorial Policy
How articles are planned, written, sourced, checked and corrected — and why advertising never gets a vote.
Last updated: September 14, 2026
This page describes how articles on The Layered Homes are planned, written, checked and corrected. It exists so that readers, advertisers and search engines can see who is behind the words and what standard they are held to.
Who writes here
Every article carries the name of the editor responsible for it — Johan Martez (House Plans, founder), Elise Marchetti (Transformations) or Rowan Whitaker (Styling & Living). Their profiles list their background, the markets they work in and how to reach them. The site is published by NEXTDIGIVERS LLC, whose team handles production and does not write editorial content.
How an article is made
- It starts with a real brief. A plan a client asked about, a room a client owned, a budget a client set. We do not write to a keyword.
- Specifics over averages. Product names, paint lines and colour numbers, fabric weights, plan numbers, and costs with the market and the date they were collected. National averages are used only when labelled as such.
- Costs are dated snapshots. A figure marked “Charleston, mid-2026” is a contractor bid or an invoice from that place and time. It is a reference point, not a quote.
- Renderings are labelled. Facade variations and “directions I’d explore” are stylist proposals rendered for illustration, not photographs of built work, and the text says so where they appear.
Images
The before-and-after studies, facade variations and styling directions on this site are digital visualisations produced for this site: one real starting condition rendered in several directions so the same room or footprint can be compared fairly. They illustrate design decisions; they are not photographs of finished client projects and are not presented as such. Floor plans, plan renderings and product images provided by plan publishers or manufacturers are used under their terms and credited where required. Every image carries descriptive alt text, and captions say what you are looking at.
How we use AI
Research, outlining, drafting, image rendering and editing tools are part of how this site is produced, as they are at most publications now. Every article is directed, fact-checked and signed off by the named editor before it is published, and the judgement in a review — what works, what fails, what it costs — is theirs. We do not publish unreviewed machine-generated text, and we do not present rendered images as photographs.
What we will not publish
- Sponsored content presented as editorial.
- Structural, electrical, plumbing or code advice offered as a substitute for a licensed professional’s judgement on your actual building.
- Reviews written from a press release rather than from the drawing or the project.
- Content scraped, spun or republished from another publication.
Sources
Plan reviews cite the designer’s published listing; cost sections cite the surveys, code editions and supplier price lists used; essays cite the research they draw on. Sources appear at the end of the article. We link to primary sources wherever they exist.
Independence
The site earns money from display advertising and from labelled affiliate links on house plan reviews. Neither influences what we cover or how we judge it: a plan gets the same read whether or not you click the purchase link, and no advertiser sees an article before it is published. We do not accept payment for reviews or placements. Gifts and free products are declined or returned.
Updates and corrections
Each article shows its publication date and, when changed, its last update. When we correct a factual error we update the text and add a note at the end of the article describing what changed. To report an error, email editor@thelayeredhomes.com with the article URL; we aim to respond within five business days.
Comments
Reader notes are welcome and are moderated before they appear. We publish disagreement and corrections; we remove spam, abuse, advertising and personal information about others. See the terms of use.
